Aston Villa are close to signing Rangers defender Calvin Bassey from Nigeria.

But coming into the 2021-22 season. He has become a key figure for Rangers, making 50 appearances across all competitions. By the last game of the season Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt, the 22-year-old defender played outstandingly.

For Bassey, he joined Leicester City’s youth team at the age of 15, becoming a key member of the Under-18s. Later until the U-23 ufabet team before joining Rangers in the summer of 2020 and working with Gerrard there.

However, Aston Villa has already strengthened the French midfielder Boubakar Kamara. The other is out of contract with Olympique Marseille and the other is a permanent contract with Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona.

Dean Jones, writing on GiveMeSport, believes Bassey’s recent cup final displays have ‘convinced some Premier League clubs’ that he is a player worthy of signing.

“Calvin Bassey has got such a high ceiling at the moment; he’s got everything,” he wrote.

“And from watching him in those big fixtures for Rangers, he will have convinced some Premier League clubs that this guy’s absolutely worth getting on board this season.”

In a different GiveMeSport article, Jones wrote: “I think there’ll be other teams linked in the next few weeks too. Because he looks to be the standout player from that Rangers team that could come straight into the Premier League.

“Obviously, there are others there too that clubs are sniffing around, but he’s the man of the moment, Bassey. And I think he does look worthy of a Premier League move.”
